Dying to self or flesh is an essential part of our faith, if we do not die (meaning to make inactive) our flesh we won't be able to walk by the spirit, for the bible tells us they are in enmity with each other.

GAL 5:17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They conflict with each other so that you are not to do whatever you want.
